I’m Really Here for Dessert
A Note from One Sisterfriend to Another
This month, we’re celebrating the G.I.F.T. found in everyday moments.
G – Gratitude for simple moments.
I – Intention to slow down.
F – Freedom to rest without guilt.
T – Time to notice what truly matters.
This week, I’m lingering on G–Gratitude.
Not the serious, make-a-list-of-everything-you’re-thankful-for kind.
I’m thinking about the pleasure of enjoying something simply
because you like it.
No special occation required.
No explanation necessary.
Sometimes “I like it” is reason enough.
And apparently, I have quite a few opinions about dessert.
With love,
Belinda
SisterFriend Reflection
”Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if it is the axis on which the earth revolves.”
—Thich Nhat Hanh
I have been known to say that I eat dinner to get to dessert.
I’m only partly joking.
Don’t misunderstand me. I appreciate a good meal. Give me a good steak cooked medium-rare and a stuffed potato with butter and cream cheese.
Yes, cream cheese.
But dessert is another matter entirely.
Anything chocolate will get my attention.
I still remember eating my first lava cake. When I cut into it, and that warm chocolate center spilled out,
I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
And banana pudding?
Could you give it to me on the second day?
That’s when it has had time to become what it was meant to be.
I know some people prefer freshly made. We can still be friends.
Probably.
Some pleasures in life don’t require much explanation.
We like what we like.
Yet somewhere along the way, we can become very serious about
everything–even enjoyment. We explain it. Justify it. Earn it. Save it for a special occasion.
I am learning to say, “I like this”
No deeper meaning required.
That’s another gift of ordinary days. They make room for the little things that make life more enjoyable.
That might be a good meal followed by something chocolate.
Although if there’s second-day banana pudding in the refrigerator, we may need to reconsider the chocolate.
After all, I’m really here for dessert.
Where Purpose Meets Strategy
This week’s strategy? Enjoy something simply because you like it.
You don't need to earn it.
You don't need to save it for a special occasion.
And there's no need to make it productive.
Maybe it’s dessert. A favorite meal. Fresh flowers. Music turned up a little
louder. Or something else that brings you uncomplicated pleasure.
A Little Challenge
Choose one small pleasure this week and enjoy it without explaining or
justifying it.
Sometimes pleasure doesn’t need a purpose.
Sometimes “I like it” is reason enough.
May you make room this week for something that delights you.
May you savor it without rushing, explaining, or turning it into something
more than it needs to be.
And if it happens to be chocolate–or second-day banana pudding–
enjoy every bite.
