Strength With Intention
Strength With Intention: A Note from One SisterFriend to Another
This week’s reflection is grounded in Audre Lorde’s words: “I am deliberate and afraid of nothing.” Some of us don’t have the luxury of falling apart for long. The pressure is real, the states are real, and decisions still have to be made. So this is for the women who keep showing up, who feel fear and still choose their next move.
I’m unpacking what it means to be deliberate: taking your time, trusting yourself, and being careful about the voices you deliberate with. And what it means to be “afraid of nothing”: not the absence of fear, but the refusal to give fear leadership.
If you’re in a season like that, sit with this for a few minutes.
With love,

SisterFriend Reflection: Strength With Intention
”I am deliberate and afraid of nothing.”
—Audre Lorde
I heard the story of a woman whose job is being phased out. She is one of twelve losing their jobs. You could hear the raw emotions in her voice. She said she is afraid. And yet, she thanked the panelists for their consistent voice and for continuing to raise the issues that affect people similarly situated.
As I listened, Audre Lorde’s line came to mind, not as a slogan, but as one way to interpret what strength sounded like in the moment: I am deliberate and afraid of nothing.” Women who know strength under pressure recognize that kind of moment. Life doesn’t pause so you can collect yourself. The expected outcome doesn’t happen, and you still have to decide what comes next.
So let’s unpack the quote.
What does it mean to be deliberate? To be deliberate is to take your time and trust yourself. It’s not hesitation. It’s not indecision. It’s strength with restraint. It’s moving forward with confidence and courage, without being pushed by urgency, pride, or panic. Being deliberate also means you are careful about the voices you let in. Not everyone should have access to your process. Everybody does not get a seat at the table when you’re making life decisions. Some voices are wise. Some voices are loud. Some voices are simply afraid, and they will try to make their fear sound like your truth. Being deliberate means you consult wisdom, not noise.
What does it mean to be “afraid of nothing”? To be afraid of nothing doesn’t mean fear never shows up. It means fear doesn’t get to lead. Fear is not useful if you want significant change in your life and in your community. Fear will keep you circling, rehearsing worst-case scenarios, calling it “being realistic,” while life waits on your decision.
People often say, “Do it afraid.” But here’s my version: Do not entertain fear. Don’t invite it in. Don’t feed it. Don’t let it narrate your life like it’s the only voice with authority. I know that can be hard. I struggled and still struggle with turning off fear. Fear can knock, but you don’t have to open the door.
This month’s reflections have been circling one reality: sometimes the expected outcome doesn’t happen.
Staying in it is a strength that allows you to stay present when you could shut down.
You do not have to pay attention to every thought you have– it is a strength that lets thoughts pass without letting them rule.
And now this third reflection is about what comes next:
When the outcome changes, you can still be deliberate.
You can still choose your next move.
You can still choose the voices you trust.
You can still refuse to allow fear the privilege of leadership.
That is strength with intention. Not the strength of pretending you’re fine. The strength of deciding you will move forward anyway, carefully, wisely, and on purpose.
Purpose Meets Strategy (Take 10 Minutes)
Name the expected outcome that didn’t happen (one sentence).
Ask: Which voices are wise–and which voices are just loud?
Choose one wise voice to consult (and one loud voice to ignore).
Write the next move you can make in 10 minutes or less.
Close with: I will be deliberate. I will not entertain fear.
May you move with intention when outcomes change.
May you choose wisdom over noise
And may you be deliberate–and afraid of nothing.
If this reflection resonates with you, share it with a SisterFriend who might need it today.
